The missing piece of the energy transition puzzle

What are battery storage systems

Battery storage systems primarily store wind and solar power that cannot be directly fed into the grid or consumed elsewhere at the time of generation. In addition, unused electricity from the grid can also be stored in the battery storage systems.

The stored electricity is fed back into the grid via the batteries at a later time. This is relevant, for example, in the evenings when solar power generation declines and household consumption is particularly high due to the use of electrical devices.

Frequently asked questions and answers

Interesting facts about battery storage.

How do battery storage systems work

Battery storage systems are technically complex systems that are increasingly establishing themselves as safer and more reliable components of the energy transition.

In addition to the actual batteries, control systems, transformers and power converters ensure efficient storage and distribution of energy.

Structure of
Battery storage

Battery storage systems consist of two separate units:

• The actual battery modules are housed in individual racks in 20-foot shipping containers

• Control systems, transformers and power converters are installed next to the battery containers to convert the electricity and distribute the stored energy

The capacity of a storage container ranges from 4 to 6 megawatt hours, depending on the model. Multiple storage units, inverters, and transformers can be combined to increase the storage capacity and performance of a battery park.

Battery storage

To advance the energy transition and stabilize the grids, East Energy is planning dozens of battery storage facilities worldwide.
In many cases, batteries are connected to solar or wind farms. Alternatively, the storage units can be integrated into the power grid as standalone units to absorb excess energy and release it when needed.
In Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, we will be building large solar parks in the coming years that will be equipped with powerful battery storage systems.

Stability for the network

Battery storage systems can be integrated into the existing German power grid using converters and transformers.

Battery storage systems require power converters to convert the direct current (DC) from the batteries into alternating current (AC) from the grid. Since battery storage systems both draw energy from and feed energy into the grid, the power converter must operate bidirectionally (in both directions) and efficiently control the flow of power in both directions.

A transformer regulates the voltage: It increases the voltage when the storage unit is to feed higher voltage ranges into the high-voltage grid and it lowers the voltage when the storage unit is charged from the grid.
