Challenges
in shipping
Stricter emission standards
-
IMO regulations, FuelEU Maritime, and EU ETS make fossil fuel propulsion uneconomical
-
Ports increasingly require emission-free layovers
-
Shipping companies under pressure from customers and certifications (ESG, Scope 3)
Lack of infrastructure for alternative fuels
-
No nationwide supply of eMethanol, LNG, or H₂
-
Tank logistics are complex, especially for inland waterway transport
-
Shore power connection only available in a few ports
High dependence on diesel and heavy fuel oil
-
Volatile fuel prices
-
Environmental regulations increase port fees and operating costs
-
Conversion is expensive and technically challenging
Investment uncertainty & lack of partners
-
Switch to alternative propulsion systems without a clear return model
-
Complex requirements for ship technology, logistics, and supply
-
Shipowners and port operators often left to their own devices

Typical application examples
in shipping
Supplying an inland waterway vessel with eMethanol instead of diesel
Solutions:
Conversion of an existing inland waterway vessel to dual-fuel technology for operation with green eMethanol. Continuous supply via mobile tank containers and local PtX partners.
Result:
Up to 90% CO₂ savings compared to diesel operation. Reliable operation, low emissions, eligible for funding through climate protection agreements or national subsidy programs. No more dependence on fossil fuels.

Shore power supply for seagoing vessels in port
Solutions:
Construction of a shore power facility with grid connection, transformer station, and intelligent load control for seagoing vessels in port (11–22 kV). Supply of green electricity from local renewable energy plants or PPAs.
Result:
Zero emissions during layover, drastic reduction of noise, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter in the port environment. Compliance with international regulations (IMO, EU FuelEU Maritime).
Charging infrastructure for electric harbor boats and ferries
Solution:
Installation of DC fast charging stations on jetties with battery storage buffering and PV feed-in. Integration of a booking system and charging prioritization via app.
Result:
Climate-neutral short-distance transport on water. Stable energy supply even when multiple ships are in operation simultaneously. Positive image effect and CO₂ savings in urban transport.

Energy self-sufficient port infrastructure through PV + storage
Solution:
Installation of large-scale PV systems on warehouses, quay walls, or parking lots, coupled with storage solutions to supply port cranes, administrative buildings, lighting, and charging infrastructure.
Result:
Electricity cost savings of up to 60%, off-grid operation of critical port infrastructure, improved sustainability balance – both for operators and local companies.
